Kidney Trauma

Blunt injury to the kidney should be suspected in the presence of pain in the flank, abdomen, lower ribs or back. 

Adults who have suffered major kidney laceration after blunt trauma generally have either 1) gross hematuria or 2) microscopic hematuria and shock;  rarely is there delayed deterioration in the absence of hematuria or shock1Intravenous contrast-enhanced CT scan is the diagnostic imaging procedure of choice.
