Jaundice, obstructive Yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes (sclerae), caused by excessive amounts of the breakdown product bilirubin, because of blockage of the pathways draining bile from the liver.

Jaundice, Neonatal Jaundice appearing the first month of life, of which by far the commonest cause is physiological immaturity of the liver, which metabolises bilirubin.

Jaundice of Prematurity See jaundice, neonatal.

Jaundice Yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes (sclerae), caused by excessive amounts of the breakdown product bilirubin.

Jejunostomy Surgically created opening from the outside of the body into the second part of the small bowel, for purposes of feeding or drainage.

Jejunum The second part, arbitrarily the upper two-fifths, of the small bowel, connecting the duodenum with the lower three-fifths (ileum) which gradually becomes histologically distinct.
