TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY 1995

PRACTICE POINTS:

Question concurrent diagnoses of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Estimation of deficits in children should take into account age, gender and premorbid academic functioning.

Recovery may continue up to at least 10 years, especially with multidisciplinary rehabilitation.

Neuropsychological testing and PET or SPECT scanning remain the most sensitive methods for detecting subtle Traumatic Brain Injury.

COLLES FRACTURE

PRACTICE POINTS:

Failure to re-xray after 7-10 days is substandard.

In the elderly, substandard follow-up may not translate into a worse functional outcome.

ILLNESS BEHAVIOUR

PRACTICE POINTS:

Abnormal Illness Behaviour does not prove nonorganic cause.

Patterns of Illness Behaviour are learned in childhood and signify more about the client than about the nature of the illness or injury.

BACTERIAL MENINGITIS

PRACTICE POINTS:

Expert witnesses on standard of care may have significantly inaccurate perceptions of reality.

Only in the easily-diagnosed minority of cases of meningitis with characteristic symptoms can treatment delays be proven harmful.
