OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA

PRACTICE POINTS:

A single episode of inhaling high concentration of a toxic chemical may cause permanent Asthma or Rhinitis (nasal allergy)

Personal Injury clients often confuse this phenomenon with the much commoner triggering of pre-existing respiratory illness

FOREIGN GLASS

PRACTICE POINTS:

Failure to document wound exploration and to order radiographs are indefensible features of retained glass foreign-bodies

LONG THORACIC

PRACTICE POINTS:

The cause of a Long Thoracic Nerve Palsy may be trauma or surgery, but is frequently unknown

Post-anesthesia cases for remote surgery are generally not caused by recognised substandard technique

Therapy is generally ineffective, at least partial permanent disability usual

MULTIPLE SENSITIVITIES

PRACTICE POINTS:

Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Syndrome is a condition diagnosed on self-report and without objective criteria

Although psychological cause is not proven, many MCS patients fulfill criteria for pre-existing or current psychiatric disorders

"Absent the exposure..." will likely be difficult to prove

MCS would presently appear to result from a psychological vulnerability combined with a mistaken belief of toxic injury

PSEUDO-OBSTRUCTION

PRACTICE POINTS:

Look for serial plain abdominal radiographs if paralytic ileus prolonged beyond 2-3 days

Free fluid and gas in the abdomen indicates acute, not earlier, bowel perforation
